What Causes Toenail Fungus?

Nail (toenail) fungus is medically know as Onychomycosis. The fungus is actually an organism that eats the keratin it finds in your toenails and fingernail. The redness and swelling around the yellow toenail is called Onychia. It usually ends up with a pusy infectious goo or the nail splitting or shedding.

For the unlucky of us who get nail fungus there’s bad news. Our nails are fairly resistant to infection and bacteria. So the good news is that most people never have to deal with toenail fungus. Unfortunately, as strong as the natural defenses are, it means that once you start suffering from nail fungus it is even harder to get rid of it. The most effective way to battle nail fungus is by attacking from the inside of your body, and also from the outside.

It generally doesn’t go away by itself, and if it does subside it usually returns even worse than before.
